Do anything dodgy like hidden text, cloaking etc and you can be sure your competitors will report you pretty quickly. You also have to be careful not to link to any crappy sites, spam sites, link farms etc. Doesn't matter if they link to you, if you link to them you get placed in a bad neighbourhood and your rankings may suffer as a result.
